C93 Virus Notification Is After Microsoft Account Credentials

2014-11-05 22:25

An email that claims to come from “Windows Outlook” brings dire news to the recipients, informing that their mailbox is infected with the C93 virus.

The message is intended to give the shivers to the receiver and proceed to check the message database with a tool available at a specific link. The scanner promoted is “the new Norton AV security anti-virus” that can “remove all Trojan and viral bugs” from the mailbox.

Even less technical users should be able to see the scam behind the message. There is no Windows Outlook team to send such communication, and even if it did, they would probably tout a Microsoft tool.

However, if one were to fall for the trick and access the link provided in the notification, they would be taken to a phishing page imitating a Microsoft Account log-in, according to Hoax Slayer.

When the “sign in” page is hit, all the information entered in the text fields is sent to the crooks, and the user is redirected to the legitimate log-in location for Microsoft services.

If the user fell for the message, they would definitely not realize the page switch and would probably assume that one character in the string had been typed incorrectly.

A Microsoft account is the key to multiple services offered by the Redmond company, and many users also use it to access Windows 8 computers.

Although C93 is not a virus, it can be as deadly.
