2022-05-20 06:52

Nikkei has recently announced that a ransomware attack impacted the Singapore group’s headquarters on May 13.

According to the public statement:

Unauthorized access to the server was first detected on May 13, prompting an internal probe. Nikkei Group Asia immediately shut down the affected server and took other measures to minimize the impact. (…) The affected server likely contained customer data, and Nikkei is currently in the process of determining the nature and scope of the attack.

The company also mentioned that an investigation on whether customer data had been accessed by threat actors or not is ongoing.

Besides, Nikkei also added that the attack’s nature and scope are yet to be determined.

However, for the moment, no evidence of data leakage has been identified.

The ransomware attack was reported to the Japanese and Singaporean authorities that handle data protection.

We sincerely apologize for the trouble we’ve caused. (…) We will take appropriate action in cooperation with relevant authorities and strive to enhance information protection.

Nikkei Also Targeted by BEC Attack in the Past

According to the BleepingComputer publication, it’s not the first time the company was impacted by a cyberattack, as two years ago a high-profile Business Email Compromise (BEC) attack impacted the company. A single wire transfer made the enterprise have financial losses of millions.

The threat actors behind this BEC scam impersonated a Nikkei executive targeting an employee of Nikkei from New York asking for a transfer of $29 million into a bank account owned by hackers.
