RTFC – the C stands for Contract

Posted by on April 17, 2016.

Information is power. Professionally it gives us a bit of an edge. So we all look out for those whitepapers and studies that might give us that edge.

When I saw information about iSherrif’s new whitepaper…

…I wanted to know more. I am already worried about Microsoft and O365, so it would be interesting to see if our concerns meshed.

I went to the download page – a page controlled by Marketo.

Life is short and we’ve learned to want instant gratification. So I was tempted by the ‘Twitter’ form-fill. But even in this high-speed pressurized world, I never sign a contract without reading the terms. These are the terms:

This is a joke, right? It cannot be serious. In return for allowing me to read the whitepaper, I have to

  • allow Marketo to make me follow other people of its choice
  • change – I repeat, change – my Twitter profile
  • and, wait for it, post tweets in my name to my Twitter contacts

Well, no matter, I can just fill in the online form instead. But I can’t. Marketo doesn’t like the fact that I use a gmail web address.

So in the end it comes to weighing up the pros and cons. Is what Marketo is offering (the whitepaper) worth the price it is demanding (control of my Twitter account).

The author of the paper, iSherrif, is not one of my top-of-mind security firms; so that would be a good place to start. I went to the web page. iSherrif sounds impressive. Why don’t I know the company better? Listen:

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March 25, 2015 – iSheriff, the industry leader in delivering cloud-based security that is the simplest and most cost effective way to protect data and devices from digital threats, has been ranked in the top position in anti-malware efficacy, according to Virus Bulletin’s rigorous comparative testing.

Virus Bulletin is one of the industry’s most highly respected, independent security testing bodies. The VB RAP (Reactive and Proactive) test measures products’ ability…

VB is indeed highly respected; and it seems that it ranks iSherrif very highly. OK, so one final check with VB: just how highly does it actually rate iSherrif?

Well, I could highlight iSherrif in this graphic, but I’ll leave you to try to find it. I’ll just give you one clue – it’s not the top-ranked position. In fact I’ll give you two other clues: there are thirteen companies ranked higher for reactive detection, and 10 ranked higher for proactive detection.

In short, iSherrif’s highest score would probably be for hype, while Marketo’s highest score would be for sheer bloody nerve.

So, no thank you iSherrif and Marketo – I don’t think I’ll bother with your whitepaper.
